Matthew Cowdrey of Australia after winning silver in the Mens 100m Final S9 at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games.
While all of the excitement and glamour of the Swimming Trials centred on the remarkable performances of Australia's young women swimmers, another teenager was quietly setting new world record marks all by himself.
Jessicah Schipper, Leisel Jones, Libby Lenton and Jade Edmistone broke four world records at the six-day meet, but 17-year-old Matthew Cowdrey nailed seven.
Competing in the Elite Athletes with a Disability events, the arm amputee established new world marks in the 50m Butterfly (twice), 50m Backstroke (twice), 100m Backstroke, 200m Individual Medley (IM) and 100m Freestyle.
The records included breaking the world mark by a full 3 seconds in the 200m IM.
Cowdrey's father Peter was confident the new world mark for 50m Butterfly would last only until the final.
"We knew he was in form, but he's never had a meet like this one. He broke three world records in one day," he told News Limited.
"I have just had a phenomenal meet. I swum well in events that I really did not expect to break records in," Cowdrey told The Age.
"The 200 IM and 100 free, those were my own personal best times so they were within reach, but the Backstroke was a complete surprise."
He is now in the Commonwealth Games swim team to contest the Elite Athletes with a Disability (EAD) races in Melbourne.
Despite the range of medals and records, Cowdrey will contest only two events at the games - the 50m and 100m Freestyle are the only two available to EAD athletes.
A Paralympian in Athens, where he won two gold, two silver and two bronze medals, Cowdrey joins the able-bodied team for the first time and is hopeful of carrying his superb form through to March.
"Athens was the highlight of my career but it's a totally different ball game when you take into perspective it will be a home crowd," Cowdrey said.
"In the Paralympic team we are a very tight knit group and I'm hoping we slot straight into this team. The spirit shown in the (team) meeting is amazing."
The EAD Commonwealth Games Swimming team is Ben Austin (NSW), Sam Bramham (Vic), Lichelle Clarke (Vic), Matthew Cowdrey (SA), Alex Harris (Vic), Katrina Lewis (NSW), Prue Watt (NSW), Annabelle Williams (NSW).
Winners in EAD events are determined by comparing the time of each swimmer to the world record time for their category of disability.
The integrated EAD competition at the Commonwealth Games will take place in the Melbourne Sports and Aquatics Centre between 16 – 21 March.
