Craig Stevens records the fastest heat in the Men's 400m Freestyle.
Australian Craig Stevens has qualified fastest for the Men’s 400m Freestyle Final this evening in a time of 3:51.26, approximately 10 seconds outside Ian Thorpe’s world record.
Welshman David Davies qualified second fastest for the Final with Scotsman David Carry and Canadian Andrew Hurd in third and fourth places respectively.
"I'm loving this. The crowd at the trials was great but this is something else," said Stevens following his win in heat three.
"I qualified fastest and I'm just going to go back and rest today, come back tonight and win."
Davies was also very positive about his qualifying swim.
"Very pleased with that. It's a good morning swim and I hope to go lot quicker tonight," Davies said.
Travis Nederpelt of Australia qualified 2.51 seconds faster than his nearest rivals in the heats of the 200m Butterfly this morning.
Nederpelt comprehensively won his heat and in doing so blew his other opponents out of the water, coming within four seconds of Michael Phelps’ 2003 world record.
But without a doubt, the drawcard of tonight’s proceedings in the pools will be the Men’s 4x100m Freestyle relay with current World Champions South Africa keen to maintain their dominance in this event.
Silver medallists in the World Championships, Canada will also line-up in the event that saw them finish in bronze medal position in Manchester in 2002.
The Australian team will be defending their position as Commonwealth champions, but will struggle with a somewhat depleted line-up from previous years.
The Finals for the Men’s 200m Freestyle, 4x100m Freestyle, and 200m Butterfly will be held tonight at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatics Centre.
