Ambrose Ezenwa representing New South Wales at the Athletics Australia Telstra A-series National Championships.
Nigerian athletes competing in the prestigious men’s 100 metres at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne will face a formidable challenge from a fellow Nigerian, Ambrose Ezenwa.
But Ambrose will be representing the green and gold of Australia rather than the green and white of Nigeria.
Now an Australian citizen, Ambrose will battle his compatriots, Olusoji Fasugba, Deji Aliu and Uchenna Emedolu in the 100 metres, 200 metres and 4 x 100 metres relay.
Ambrose is remembered in Nigeria for his performances at the Abuja National Stadium, where the annual Track and Field Championships provided national team selection opportunities.
In January this year, Ambrose finished a narrow second to Australia’s Matt Shirvington at the A-series meeting in Canberra, losing by a narrow one-hundredth of a second.
In the Commonwealth Games selection trials in Sydney last month, Ambrose was squeezed into third place by Daniel Batman in the 200 metres.
The event was won by world championship finalist Patrick Johnson who sped to victory in a new personal best of 20.49 seconds.
Athletics competition begins at the MCG on Sunday 19 March, and continues until 25 March.
