Boniface Kiprop of Uganda competes in the men's 10,000m during the Athens Olympics.
Uganda is pinning its hopes of winning a Commonwealth Games gold medal on an athlete who ended the country’s 33-year gold medal drought.
Distance runner Dorcus Inzikuru won the inaugural women's 3,000m steeplechase at the world championships in Helsinki just over six months ago to secure gold, and a place in her country’s sporting history.
Now expectations are rising in Uganda that she will be able to chase down its first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Twenty-four-year old Inzikuru holds the fastest time for the distance - 9:15.04.
She missed a medal at the Manchester Commonwealth Games, finishing fourth in the 5,000 metres which was won by Briton’s Paula Radcliffe.
In 2003, she followed up with a silver medal over 5000 metres at the All-Africa Games.
Another strong medal prospect among Uganda’s ten-strong Track and Field team is former world junior 10,000 metre champion, Boniface Kiprop.
The 20-year-old finished fourth in the 10,000m final in Helsinki and seventh when he debuted in a senior world cross-country long race in France.
Athletics competition begins at the MCG on Sunday 19 March, and continues until 25 March.
