Cydonie Mothersill will contest the 200m and cheer on Ato Modibo, her husband, in the 400m.

A husband and wife Athletics campaign stretches across two Commonwealth nations, as Cydonie Mothersill runs for the Cayman Islands and Ato Modibo represents Trindidad and Tobago.

Ranked fourth in the world over the 200m dash, Mothersill plans to deliver the Caymans its first ever gold medal in Melbourne.

“I feel really good about my Games prospects. I am from a very small country, so to bring home a medal of any colour would be magnificent,” she said.

As Mothersill focusses on her own 200m target for the Caymans, she will also be cheering for her husband, Ato Modibo, as he competes in the men’s 400m - representing Trinidad and Tobago.

"We probably motivate each other, off and on the track, so that's the most important part," Modibo told The Age newspaper.

Modibo, a two-time Olympian and Melbourne gold-medal prospect, has a 400m personal best time of 44.87 seconds.

“Looking at the competition I think you will need to run under 45 seconds if you want to be in the medals,” he said. “I know I can run that fast, and it is always my aim, my goal. It is just a matter of putting it all on the line.”

Mothersill is a part of the Cayman Islands’ largest ever representation at the Games, with 30 athletes competing in Cycling, Shooting, Squash, Swimming and Athletics.

Team Chef de Mission Lori Powell said she is excited that the Cayman Islands will have such a strong presence at the Games.

“We have four 2004 Olympians – Mothersill, Shaune Fraser, Andrew Mackay and Kareem Streete-Thompson, who captured a bronze medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England – and athletes who have Commonwealth Games experience,” she said.

The Cayman Islands Games athletes are:

Perri Merren (Cycling), Cydonie Mothersill, Michael Letterlough, Ronald Forbes, Robert Ibeh, Stephen Johnson, Kareem Streete-Thompson (Athletics), Andrew Mackay, Jennifer Powell, Shaune Fraser (Swimming), Christopher Jackson, Robert Harris, Thomas Ebanks, Edison McLean (Shooting), Chantelle Day, Jeff Broderick (Squash).
