Dorcus Inzikuru of Uganda claims gold in the 3,000m Steeplechase.
The hot favourite for the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase, Uganda’s Dorcus Inzikuru, has run home for her country’s first gold medal in Track and Field.
In a dramatic run at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), 24-year-old Inzikuru finished in 9:19.51, with three Australians on her tail.
Melissa Rollison crossed the line for silver, Donna MacFarlance took bronze and Victoria Mitchell ran fourth.
Inzikuru led the fast group over the hurdles and water pit, with Rollinson competing head-to-head in the final two laps.
The fast pace eventually broke up the lead group but the two front-runners held identical strides in the last laps. At the third and final hurdle, Rollinson mistimed her step allowing the Ugandan to streak away into the home straight. Her momentum was too much for the Australian.
Inzikuru, the world’s 3000m Steelechase number one, is making her Games debut in Melbourne.
